Although I did not have to use the adapter on the planes I recently flew (Iberia & American, if the plane you fly has 2 prong outlet, the adapter is a must have in order to avoid annoying one bud audio performance. I think the 2 prong adapter is necessary for newer planes with personal screens. Iberia and American planes did not have personal screens. The last adapter I bought in Japan cost $19 and it broke.
